headspace centres are a 'one stop shop' of service providers offering comprehensive support to young people aged 12-25 years of age in four core areas: primary health, mental health, drug and alcohol services and vocational/educational services.

Orygen, the National Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health have created an Individual Placement and Support (IPS) Jobs Victoria program in four headspace centres, of which Orygen are the lead agency. Orygen seek to recruit an experienced vocational specialist to be based at headspace Sunshine.

The role

Full time, 12 month fixed-term contract

The position requires extensive knowledge and expertise in the career development or disability employment sector, with a demonstrated understanding of youth mental health. The position's focus is to implement the Individual Placement and Support Jobs Victoria project in our centres.

The vocational specialist is required to work intensively with young people experiencing a range of mental health issues. This will include assertive outreach work and employer engagement to ensure young people are well supported and have access to suitable employment opportunities.

The specialist will provide vocational leadership to clinical staff and actively develop partnerships with a wide range of external organisations to enhance vocational outcomes for young people. This will include extensive contact with employers, training providers, educational institutions, community service organisations and other health professionals.

The vocational specialist at each site will supervise a youth peer worker who will assist with vocational activities and promote the vocational program to young people coming into the centre.

In addition, the vocational specialist will be required to present information at clinical meetings and provide professional development workshops to promote the vocational recovery program both internally and outside the service.

About you


  • Experience in employment services, vocational rehabilitation, career development or a related field.
  • Bachelor degree in a relevant field.
  • Extensive knowledge of issues that impact young people when accessing employment and/or educational opportunities.
  • Advanced computer skills.
  • Experience developing good business relationships.
  • Knowledge of the employment services sector, Centrelink and other state and federal employment initiatives that impact young people.
  • Willingness to learn relevant administrative procedures, including software applications and filing systems.


  • Experience providing career-planning advice to young people.
  • An understanding of the Individual Placement and Support model
  • Experience working with people experiencing mental health issues.
  • Eligible for membership to the Career Development Association of Australia (CDAA).
  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
