If something you see online makes you worry that someone might be self-harming or suicidal, but they’re not in immediate danger, there are different steps you can take depending on how you’re feeling, how well you know the person, and what you feel is best.
Helping someone who’s self-harming or at risk of suicide can be emotionally demanding. So start by checking in with yourself and asking:
How am I feeling?
Do I feel able to support them?
What support can I provide?
Am I ok knowing that they might not be open to receiving my help?
What boundaries do I want to set? Responding to someone who’s self-harming or suicidal can be hard, and it’s important to be mindful of how much time you have to give, and the type of support you can and can’t offer.
