Some popular phrases people use to talk about self-harm and suicide carry stigma, which makes it harder for people who need support to reach out for it. Here are some examples: 

Saying "took their own life" or "died by suicide" instead of "committed suicide" (because it isn't a crime) is more kind.  

Calling suicide "selfish" carries shame. This language can also make it harder for people who need support to reach out for is.
