Who should apply
The Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work (Consumer Peer Work) is designed for people with personal lived experience to obtain a nationally recognised qualification in mental health peer work.
What you'll learn
Students will learn and gain skills in:
- providing consumer mental health peer work,
- applying evidence-based mental health frameworks, standards and practices,
- working with people from diverse backgrounds, including First Nations people, and
- work health and safety in the mental health sector.
The course is made up of interactive virtual workshops, online self-paced learning and an 80-hour placement. Supervised placement is a key part of the course and will allow students to apply their skills in the real world.
Graduates will receive a nationally-accredited qualification.

MENTAL HEALTH PEER WORK SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Orygen is offering scholarships to people with lived experience of mental ill-health who are interested in undertaking Orygen's Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work.
The scholarships have been made available through an new initiative by the Victorian Government’s Lived Experience Branch, Mental Health, and Wellbeing Division.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Scholarship applicants must:

Be 17 years or older;

Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or a holder of a permanent residence visa, or a migrant, refugee or asylum seeker holding a temporary or bridging visa providing work and/or study rights;

Not be currently attending secondary school;

Have lived experience of mental ill-health;

Be able to meet the attendance and study requirements to complete the Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work with Orygen;
Priority will be given to First Nations applicants and people that live in rural or remote areas. Preference will be given to those not employed by the Commonwealth or a State/Territory Government.
SCHOLARSHIP DETAILS
The scholarship consists of $4,000 towards the tuition costs and a $1,000 stipend paid in four instalments.

Meet our peer worker trainers
Ash
Ash is a Peer Work Trainer at Orygen who has experience as a peer worker across various fields including mental health, youth, LGBTQIA+ and disability. They are particularly interested in making sure peer work is valued as its own important mode of support, and that the power of lived experience is appreciated as its own form of expertise.
Betty
Betty is a qualified Youth Worker and Peer Worker who has worked with Young People and Older Adults in a variety of Community Mental Health settings. She completed the Cert IV in Mental Health Peer Work and has up to 5.5 years of experience working in a multidisciplinary team supporting people in the public mental health sector using the principles of Intentional Peer Support (IPS), strengths based and person-centred care as part of her work. As a Peer Work trainer, she hopes to empower students studying the course to be empowered Peer Workers where they can make a lasting impact for themselves and for their community.
