Supporting young parents: addressing perinatal and youth mental health needs

Parenthood can be both a rewarding and challenging experience for new and expecting parents. We know that during this time of transition, experiences of mental ill-health are common.

Young parents disproportionately experience mental ill-health or mental ill-health risk factors.

In partnership with PANDA – Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Australia, Orygen worked with young parents, youth mental health and perinatal mental health stakeholders to develop solutions that best support young parents.

Key solutions involve the development of a national perinatal mental health strategy; ensuring that guidelines, services and resources meet the needs of young parents; and developing supports to help young parents reach their education or employment goals.
