Orygen welcomes commitment from Australian Government in Budget 2017

The Australian Government is prioritising mental health research in the 2017/18 Budget, by investing $15 million over two years. Specifically this investment provides $5 million over two years to Orygen, The National Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health, these funds will enable Orygen us to continue to grow our capacity as an world leading integrated healthcare and translational research organisation dedicated to focusing on mental ill-health in young people.

Professor Patrick McGorry AO, Executive Director of Orygen, welcomed the announcement and said investing in mental health research offers a great return on investment.

“Mental health is the one area of the health system which is sustainable, will strengthen society and will produce extensive savings across the government,” said Professor McGorry.

“The funding will enable Orygen’s work to continue to grow and flourish as we strive to achieve our goal for all young people to enjoy optimal mental health as they grow into adulthood.”
