Special Symposium on Suicide Prevention

To compliment the release of Orygen’s policy paper, ‘Raising the Bar for Youth Suicide Prevention’ a special symposium was held on Monday, 12 December 2016, which  brought together both local and international speakers. Orygen was delighted to have  Professor Ulrich Hegerl, a leading suicide prevention expert  from the University Hospital of Leipzig Clinic and Policlinic of Psychiatry in Germany, speak about the effectiveness of a concept  that involved four-levels of  intervention to target depression and suicidal behaviour. Prof Hegerl was also joined by Dr Jane Perkis, Director of the Centre for Mental Health , the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health , The University of Melbourne who spoke on the role of media campaigns in suicide prevention and Orygen’s own Dr Jo Robinson, Head, Suicide Prevention who outlined a new systematic approach to preventing youth suicide.

Another highlight from the event was hearing from Rachael Stevens a member of Orygen’s Live It Speak It program which focussed on looking for a way forward in suicide prevention in Australia.
