We welcome certainty of mental health funding and commitment to reform

Orygen, The National Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health welcomes the decision of the Australian Government to renew funding for mental health services for 12 months, while it works through the National Mental Health Commission’s review and its recommendations.

We also welcome the commitment to ‘positive reform’ articulated by Federal Minister for Health, the Hon Sussan Ley MP, and look forward to working with the Minister and the Department on improving mental health services for young Australians.

‘The process instigated by the National Mental Health Commission review is a unique opportunity for reform across the Australian mental health sector – an opportunity that cannot be missed,’ says Professor Patrick McGorry AO, Executive Director of Orygen.

‘Australia leads the world in mental health awareness, however this awareness is yet to fully translate into reform and coverage. The sector is ready to work with Government to ensure effective reform of mental health services and a commitment to improving care through increased investment in innovative service delivery and research.’
