Foundations in Mental Health Practice

OVERVIEW                            

Due to the popularity and demand of our Certificate IV in Youth Mental Health Peer work, we will soon be launching the Foundations in Mental Health Practice short course program. This program consists of a suite of online short courses, designed to assist students wanting to pursue further education or a career in the mental health sector, but are unsure which qualification is right for them. 

The three courses include: 

  • CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people  
  • CHCMHS007 Work effectively in trauma informed care  
  • CHCMHS008 Promote and facilitate self-advocacy  

Graduates who successfully complete the units will receive credits and have a pathway into a range of qualifications in the CHC Community Services Training Package, including the CHC43315 Certificate IV in Mental Health; CHC43515 Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work; CHC40421 Certificate IV in Youth Work; or CHC40521 Certificate IV in Youth Justice.

WHAT you will learn              

We will be offering training for the following three endorsed units of competency. Each unit provides a set of unique knowledge and skills that can be applied to a range of contexts within the mental health sector.  

CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people  

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work respectfully with people from diverse social and cultural groups and situations, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

CHCMHS007 Work effectively in trauma informed care  

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to practice and contribute to the continuous improvement of trauma informed care within a service. 

The unit applies to individuals working in the community services and health sectors where services are informed by the knowledge and understanding of central trauma, particularly the impact of interpersonal violence.

CHCMHS008 Promote and facilitate self-advocacy 

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to encourage, support and promote self-advocacy. The promotion and facilitation of self-advocacy contribute to a person’s self-determination, empowerment and right to make informed choices regarding all aspects of their life.

COURSE DURATION AND TIMING 

The course will run for 12 weeks, commencing in June, 2026.

COURSE FEES 

$1,550 or $550 for individual units of competency 

Orygen will be offering the units as a package where you can gain some efficiencies in the assessments across all three units, as well as a cost saving of $100.

Alternatively, you may choose to study one unit at a time.
