The complexities of modern masculinity were explored when Orygen recently hosted Young Men, Masculinity, and Mental Health, a policy-focused webinar that explored the intersection of masculinity and the mental health of young men.
Hosted by Orygen Policy Manager, David Baker, the session emphasised the critical need for enhanced support for young men’s mental health, presenting new polling data gathered from 800 young men.
The panel featured expert contributions from Orygen Associate Professor Zac Seidler, Dr Krista Fisher (Research Fellow, Movember Institute), Al Green (co-founder, The Man Cave), and James Smith (Professor of Health and Social Equity, Flinders University).
Discussions focused on how policy can drive better mental health outcomes, with key topics including social expectations, sector shortcomings, the influence of social media on masculinity, and the importance of role models in young men’s lives.
The session also highlighted the importance of broadening the discourse on masculinity to inform mental health care and policy more effectively.
