Expression of interest: virtual reality project - youth advisors
.png.aspx)
We're looking for youth advisors who've experienced difficulties with hallucinations in social situations and have been diagnosed with a psychotic disorder to help us develop and design virtual reality (VR) environments to be used in a new Orygen Digital study.
What's the opportunity?
Orygen Digital needs a team of up to 10 youth advisors (ages 16 to 25) who have experienced trouble participating in social situations because of hallucinations.
As a youth advisor, you'll use your lived experience to help us develop VR content and provide your opinion on key design aspects in preparation for the study later this year.
We'd like a broad representation of young people with lived experience of different types of social difficulties.
Your help will make the project as inclusive, functional, engaging and user-friendly as possible.
WHAT's INVOLVED?
Youth advisors will choose one of two options for their involvement in the project:
Option 1: Youth advisors will meet as a group in 2x workshop sessions. This will be followed by 1x one-on-one consultation.
Option 2: A youth advisor will participate in up to 3x one-on-one consultations.
The workshops and consultations will happen over MS Teams and will be 2 hours long. While dates aren’t confirmed just yet, workshops and consultations be conducted sometime in March 2023. Once we’ve confirmed your involvement, the group facilitator will work with you to arrange meeting times that work with your schedule.
The goals of each workshop and the consultations will be communicated to you before each session.
As a youth advisor in this project, you might be expected to:
- Discuss (broadly) your experiences in facing hallucinations and social challenges in public spaces and social environments;
- Discuss what to put in the virtual social environments that could be helpful in learning coping and managing hallucinations;
- Collaborate with group members in activities (if participating in workshops).
In your role, there might be times where you feel it would be useful to share your lived experience of mental health, however this is entirely up to you and there is no pressure for you to do so. Anything shared during workshops, consultations or via email with the project team will not be shared outside of the team without your consent.
The project team is composed of researchers, clinicians and technology developers from Orygen and the University of Melbourne. The workshops will be run by a group facilitator, Shona Louis, who will be supported by the project lead, Rose Pot-Kolder.
AM I ELIGIBLE?
We're looking for people who:
- Are aged 16 to 25 years;
- Are based in Australia;
- Have experienced difficulties in social situations because of hallucinations;
