I am a graphic designer currently pursuing a Bachelor (Hons) degree in Psychology. I see art and multimedia as a medium for mental health advocacy. It is heartbreaking that attempted suicide rates among teenagers in Malaysia rose to 9.5 per cent in 2022, meaning almost one in 10 had attempted suicide. Hence, youth mental health advocacy is incredibly crucial to increase help-seeking behaviours among teenagers and to destigmatise mental illness.

I aim to address the critical issue of youth suicide in Malaysia through a project that involves creating a concise yet informative suicide prevention e-booklet. This booklet will be designed to reach a wide audience by being published in three languages: Malay, English and Chinese, reflecting Malaysia’s linguistic diversity. The primary objective of the project is to provide essential information about suicide prevention. This will cover topics such as myths and facts, recognising emergency signs, self-help techniques, journaling recommendations, safety plans, where to seek help, and the steps involved in seeking help at government hospitals. To make the content engaging and accessible to young people, the booklet will incorporate illustrations that capture attention and facilitate better understanding. By leveraging visuals and straightforward language, the aim is to make the information relatable and approachable for the target audience.
