Clinical complexity

Clinical complexity

Put simply, a young person with clinical complexity is a young person with a lot going on; they have complex needs. In addition to experiencing mental ill-health, they may be experiencing a range of other psychological or social issues such as homelessness, substance abuse or other physical or emotional health issues; they might be dealing with other legal or financial problems; or they may be under pressure at school, work, or home.

If you’re working with a young person with clinical complexity, it is important to keep an open mind. Be honest with them in your approach and understand that there are many factors that may limit their ability to engage with you or your service. With careful planning and the right resources, it is possible to address these complex needs and work with the young person in a manner which works for you both.
