Statement from Professor Patrick McGorry, Orygen executive director

It has been brought to my attention today that MP Dr Fiona Martin has paid for social media advertising featuring a photograph of myself and comments from me regarding Dr Martin’s advocacy for mental health reform. These comments were selectively extracted from a past email sent to acknowledge Dr Martin's role in co-chairing with Emma McBride MP the Parliamentary Inquiry into Mental Health, which was tabled in March.

I did not authorise my image or the selected comments being used for any purpose, nor was I approached to authorise such usage.

I have this afternoon contacted Dr Martin and asked her to withdraw the advertising from circulation.

I have always approached mental health reform from a non-partisan perspective. Supporting the mental health of Australians should be a top priority for all parliamentarians. There is no place for such partisanship when people’s lives and livelihoods are at stake.
