National Youth Mental Health Workforce Strategy and Training Framework

Orygen, The National Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health has released its first National Youth Mental Health Workforce Strategy and National Youth Mental Health Workforce Training Framework which together aim to support our vision for all young people to enjoy optimal mental health as they grow into adulthood.

These documents provide guidance and support to service planners, managers and trainers of staff who work in the prevention, early intervention or treatment of mental ill-health in young people aged 12-25 years.

National Youth Mental Health Workforce Strategy 2016-2020

The strategy outlines a high-level approach to building the current and future youth mental health workforce in Australia. It is structured around four key areas of focus:

  • A capable and skilled clinical and non-clinical youth mental health workforce which can provide evidence-based and appropriate care to young people across the stages of mental ill-health.

  • A sustainable, secure and ongoing supply of appropriately qualified youth mental health professionals and specialists.

  • A culture of innovation and continuous improvement which is embedded across the youth mental health workforce.

  • A responsive, collaborative and flexible youth mental health workforce.

National Youth Mental Health Workforce Training Framework

The framework is inclusive of both the traditional mental health clinical workforce as well as workers in human services, education and justice. It seeks to:

  • Identify the competencies required to work effectively in the youth mental health field.

  • Assist service managers and planners to identify the training needs of staff.

  • Be compatible with existing education frameworks (such as the Australian Qualifications Framework).

  • Guide investment in youth mental health training towards that which is current and evidence- based.
