Healthcare experiences And needs of young people living with co-occurring Mental Ill-health and Chronic pain (HAMIC)

It is known that chronic pain (defined as any bodily pain that has lasted or recurred for more than three months; examples include headache, back pain, knee pain) and mental ill-health (such as depression, anxiety, or other mental health conditions, as well as symptoms of these conditions) emerge, and can occur together, in young people.

This can create challenges for young people in trying to navigate multiple healthcare systems or healthcare professionals to manage both chronic pain and a mental ill-health.

Via a one‑off survey, the HAMIC study aims to:

  • Understand the barriers and facilitators to accessing healthcare when experiencing both chronic pain and a mental ill-health.
  • Determine youth identified priority solutions for managing co-occurring chronic pain and mental ill-health.
  • Identify how these experiences and needs differ based on key demographics such as: different pain and mental health conditions; states of residence and metropolitan versus rural/remote areas; age, sex assigned at birth, gender and sexual identities, socioeconomic status, and culturally and linguistically diverse young people; and young people living with neurodiversity or disability.

what does the study involve

HAMIC study participants will be asked to complete one survey of 15-20 minutes. After consenting to participate and being screened to check that you are eligible, you will be asked to respond to a series of online questions that will capture:

  • your healthcare experiences and needs
  • your demographic information
  • your pain and mental health history
  • your current pain and mental health symptoms.

You will need access to the internet and a mobile phone, tablet, or laptop to respond to questions.

reimbursement

For completing the one-off survey, you will go into a draw to win one of 20 cash prizes worth $100 each.

eligibility

We are seeking young people aged 16 to 25 years who are currently living with both:

  • chronic pain (defined as any bodily pain that has lasted or recurred for more than three months; examples include headache, back pain, knee pain) and,
  • mental ill-health (such as depression, anxiety, or other mental health conditions, as well as symptoms of these conditions).

To participate in this study, you can be based anywhere in Australia.
