Eating Disorders

Australia has the highest rates of eating disorders in the world, with 1.1 million people living with these conditions. Since 2012, eating disorders in young people aged 10-19 have risen by 86 per cent, and anorexia nervosa is the most deadly of all mental health conditions.

Despite the high prevalence and increasing rates of anorexia nervosa, particularly in young people, treatment options are limited – and these treatments are only effective in about 50 per cent of people.

Orygen’s eating disorders program focuses on prevention, early identification and intervention, and developing treatment breakthroughs for eating disorders.

Our research uses a range of biological and psychosocial measures to better understand how eating disorders develop, why they persist and how we can develop and trial new and more effective treatments.

We’re tackling these key questions:

  • What biological and psychosocial factors contribute to the development and maintenance of eating disorders?

  • How do we identify people with eating disorders and intervene earlier?

  • How can we develop more effective treatments?
