    Orygen researchers receive more than $2.3M to expand youth mental health research

    Research into psychosis and suicide prevention will receive more than $2.3 million in funding through the National Health and Medical Research Council’s fellowship program, federal health minister Greg Hunt announced on 11 October.

    Celebrating headspace day 2017

    Orygen was proud to support headspace day on 9 October to kick off National Mental Health Week. It was a great opportunity for our four headspace centres in Craigieburn, Glenroy, Sunshine and Werribee to get involved with this year’s theme which was centred around people sharing tips on how they take care of their mental health.

    Orygen reviews ABS’s latest Causes of Death data

    The Australian Bureau of Statistics has released the 2016 Causes of Death data, which include national suicide information. Orygen assessed the data and noted that, despite a reduction in the overall suicide rate between 2015 and 2016, suicide remains the leading cause of death for Australians under the age of 44 years, and is increasing in young Australians.

    Breaking ground on the Capital Project

    Orygen is pleased to announce that we have officially started construction on our Capital Project! This first milestone was celebrated with a sod turn in the company of the Minister for Mental Health, the Hon Martin Foley MP alongside key guests from various organisations, as well as members of the Orygen board on the Wednesday, 13 September 2017.

    Welcome to the next generation of our Youth Advisory and Research Council members

    In the last week of July, Orygen bought together its new Youth Advisory Council  and  Youth Research Council members from across Australia to induct them into their new roles which they will hold for the next two years. This was a great opportunity for all members to get acquainted with each other and also to learn more about Orygen, our rich history and key staff at that they will be working with regularly.

    Community leader forum – Youth suicide prevention

    Melbourne’s North-West region has always been a key area of interest for Orygen, given our four headspace centres in the region, so when we were approached by Hobson’s Bay City Council to partner on a community event about youth suicide prevention we were keen to be on board.

    Protecting the mental health of young workers

    Orygen’s National Vocational Services Manager, Gina Chinnery recently presented at the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industries’ forum which focused on ‘Protecting the mental health of young workers’ where she highlighted the success of our vocational projects including our involvement in Victorian State Government’s Jobs Victoria Employment Network (JVEN) and also our Youth Online Training and Employment System (YOTES) currently in development.

    Hats for Hope 2017

    Tickets are now available for fashion-fundraiser of the year, ‘Hats for Hope’ which showcases never-before-seen vintage Christian Dior hats in a fashion parade. All proceeds from the event will raise vital funds for suicide prevention projects at Orygen.
